Solving the 1st Layer
So... let's begin.
Step 1: Choosing a side
Most people, myself included, prefer using the white face as the first layer. However, people who are 'colour neutral' can start with different colours depending on the situation.
Here, I recommend starting with the white face, not only because it's commonly used, but also for the purpose of the tutorial.
So now what you need to do is to find the white centre and hold the cube in a way so that it faces up.
Step 2: Making a cross
1. Locate all the white edges
2. Look for paired up edges
3. Put paired edges in to the right place
4. Look for white pieces on the bottom face
5. Pair them up with the corresponding centre
6. Put it into the right place
Step 3: Putting corners into place
1. Locate all the four corners with the colour white
2. Place the corner directly below where it is supposed to be placed, with white facing the front
3. Move the corner out of the way (to the left if it is at the righ, and to the right if it is at the left)
4. Bring the other pieces down (pieces in the top layer)
5. Pair them up with the corresponding corner (the one you just moved away)
6. Put them back to the right place
7. Repeat this with the remaining three corner pieces
